Job Title: PE Teacher and Lunch/Playground Supervisor (Part-time) 
Position Type: Part-time 20 hours per week, 10-months (August – May)
Reports To: Assistant Head of School 

Job Overview:

The PE Teacher and Lunch/Playground Supervisor combines teaching physical education (PE) to students from Kindergarten through 6th grade, promoting physical fitness, teamwork, and a love of movement, with supervising students during lunch and recess to ensure their safety, well-being, and enjoyment. The ideal candidate will be passionate about creating engaging PE lessons while ensuring a safe, inclusive, and positive environment during outdoor breaktimes.

Key Responsibilities:

Physical Education Teacher:

  • Lesson Planning and Instruction: Design and deliver age-appropriate PE lessons that foster physical fitness, teamwork, and a positive attitude toward physical activity.

  • Student Assessment: Observe, assess, and provide feedback on student progress (2-3 evaluations per year), ensuring students’ growth in physical skills and fitness levels.

  • Curriculum Integration: Collaborate with Lead Teachers to incorporate interdisciplinary themes (e.g., mini-Olympics) into the PE curriculum.

  • Content Creation: Contribute to monthly newsletters with engaging updates, photos, and highlights from PE classes.

  • Resource Management: Maintain and organize PE equipment, ensuring it is in good working condition and properly stored. Serve as the point of contact for all PE and playground-related equipment needs.

Playground/Breaktime/Recess Supervisor:

  • Supervision of Lunch: Oversee the lunch period for lower elementary students (20-25 minutes), ensuring a safe and positive lunchtime environment.

  • Recess & Playground Supervision: Coordinate and supervise recess/playground activities (30-40 minutes), setting up equipment, creating a structured game schedule, and ensuring students follow safety and behavioral guidelines.

  • Staff Coordination: Supervise and support part-time staff during recess, holding regular meetings (1-2 times per year) to establish expectations and behavioral norms for playground supervision.

  • Playground Maintenance: Oversee the daily clean-up of the playground and lunch areas, ensuring that all equipment is stored properly at the end of each day.

  • Health & Safety: Document any injuries, administer first aid as necessary, and communicate any incidents to teachers and parents as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching PE at the elementary school level, grades K - 6th.

  • A Bachelor's degree in Elementary Physical Education or a related field is preferred.

  • Montessori teaching credentials are strongly preferred, but not required.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and build positive relationships with students, parents, and colleagues.

  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively with minimal supervision.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with a commitment to maintaining a safe and orderly environment.

  • Ability to create an inclusive, positive atmosphere during break times and encourage active participation in PE classes.

Schedule:

This is a part-time, 10-month position (August through May) requiring approximately 20 hours per week. The schedule includes:

  • On-campus in person daily 11:30 - 3:30

  • Daily supervision of lunchtime and recess/playground activities (11:45 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.)

  • Time allocated for planning, collaboration, professional development, and required meetings

  • Set-up and clean-up before and after PE classes and recess supervision
